Before purchasing drone insurance, here are some important questions to ask your insurance agent:
- Do you have policies that combine liability and hull insurance together?
Sometimes buying them together can be a cheaper option. - How comprehensive is your liability insurance?
Besides the basic protection from claims of bodily injury or damage to property by third parties it may be possible to also get insured for other claims such as negligence or invasion of privacy. - How much will I pay for deductibles?
It is important to know what your out-of-pockets costs will be for the insurance coverage. Usually, 5 percent to 10 percent of the total amount is charged. - Does this insurance provide coverage outside the USA?
If you plan on traveling with your sUAV, you will want to know if you have coverage in the event that your drone gets damaged or causes any damage in another country. - Is in-transit coverage provided?
Does your policy provide coverage to your drone and all your equipment while you are traveling to your destination? In-transit coverage can be very important if you are on the road a lot.Be sure that you understand exactly what is covered and what isn’t. Are you covered when traveling outside the country? Are their any circumstances that aren’t covered? - Do I have to pay for additional drones separately?
If you have more than one drone, you need to see if you can get all-in-one coverage or if each drone needs to be insured separately. Most insurance companies can insure all your UAV’s so long as they are used one at a time. You may have to pay a higher premium for more than one drone. - Do I need proof of drone training to qualify for coverage?
Some drone insurers do require that you provide them with proof of your drone pilot training and experience in operating your drone or drones safely.
